چکیده

The complexation equi li bria of zinc(lI ) wi th 2-hydroxy-IAnaphthoquinone. 5-hydroxyIA-naphthoquinone and 5.8-dihydroxyIA-naphthoquinone have been studied spectrophotometri call y as a function of pH in 50~ (1'/1') ethanol-water medium at 25°C and an ionic strength of 0.1 M NaCI04 . The spectral study of the complexati on reactions has been carried out in solutions contain ing equimolar concentrations or an excess of one component in the pH range of study. The chelation capabilities of these hydrox ynaphthoquinones with zinc(lI) have been examined. The complexation equilibria have been demonstrated and charac terized by analysis of the absorbance versus pH graphs. The composition . molar absorpti vities, equ ilibrium constants and stability constants of zinc(lI ) complexes with these reage nt s have been determined. The fundamental conditions favouring direct spectrophotometric determination of trace amounts of zinc( lI ) using naphthazarin have been investigated.

OXIDATIVE DEHYDROGENATION OF 1-TETRALONES: SYNTHESIS OF JUGLONE, NAPHTHAZARIN, AND ?-HYDROXYANTHRAQUINONES

Treatment of 5,8-dihydroxy-1-tetralone (9) with either 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-1,4-benzoquinone (DDQ) in refluxing benzene or silver (I) oxide in refluxing 1,4-dioxane afforded juglone (5-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone) (1) in good yield. With manganese dioxide in dioxane the tetralone gave a mixture of juglone and naphthazarin (5,8-dihydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone) (3), the proportion of naphthazarin...

Effects of juglone and lawsone on oxidative stress in maize coleoptile cells treated with IAA

Naphthoquinones are secondary metabolites widely distributed in nature and produced by bacteria, fungi and higher plants. Their biological activity may result from induction of oxidative stress, caused by redox cycling or direct interaction with cellular macromolecules, in which quinones act as electrophiles. The redox homeostasis is known as one of factors involved in auxin-mediated plant grow...

Naturally Occurring Hydroxy Napthoquinones and Their Iron Complexes as Modulators of Radiation Induced Lipid Peroxidation in Synaptosomes

The modulation of radiation induced lipid peroxidation in synaptosomes by iron (II) and iron (III) complexes of two naturally occurring and therapeutically relevant naphthoquinones viz. 5,hydroxy-1,4 naphthoquinone; juglone and 2,hydroxy-1,4 naphthoquinone; lawsone, have been studied. At lower concentrations the complexes enhance lipid peroxidation predominantly through redox cycling as observe...

Antibacterial activity of Tabebuia impetiginosa Martius ex DC (Taheebo) against Helicobacter pylori.

The growth-inhibiting activity of Tabebuia impetiginosa Martius ex DC dried inner bark-derived constituents against Helicobacter pylori ATCC 43504 was examined using paper disc diffusion and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) bioassays. The activity of the isolated compounds was compared to that of the commercially available anti-Helicobacter pylori agents, amoxicillin, metronidazole, and t...

Modulation of Basophils' Degranulation and Allergy-Related Enzymes by Monomeric and Dimeric Naphthoquinones

Allergic disorders are characterized by an abnormal immune response towards non-infectious substances, being associated with life quality reduction and potential life-threatening reactions. The increasing prevalence of allergic disorders demands for new and effective anti-allergic treatments. Here we test the anti-allergic potential of monomeric (juglone, menadione, naphthazarin, plumbagin) and...
